A standard language for data specification

forms a neutral computer processable conceptual schema
can be parsed into a variety of formats
(e.g. SQL, C++, FORTRAN).

It allows a data model of a product to be defined in terms of:

a schema,
containing entities
with attributes,
and constraints.
