The Role of EXPRESS

EXPRESS has been created specifically to define the information throughout a product’s life-cycle.

EXPRESS itself does not provide for the definition of database formats, file formats, or transfer syntax.
Other parts of ISO 10303 provide for mappings from EXPRESS schemata to implementation forms;
(e.g. ISO 10303-21 which defines the exchange file format).
EXPRESS data models are used to generate the data structures held within the STEP physical file using the mappings defined in the standard.
However, the STEP physical file format is totally independent of EXPRESS.
